A few personal notes, which may or may not be of interest to you.

At this moment I’m not exactly sure when I’m leaving Texas. People have to get back to me and set a time to work. So I’m planning on getting a laptop and wireless internet soon so that way I can be a lot more productive.

What have I been up to recently? Rereading the Republic slowly and thinking quite a lot about the issues of piety, justice, and what exactly it is that gets us to obey the law but also be flexible/humane. I guess those sorts of considerations can be entitled “the spirit of the law,” not sure. I’m in the midst of Xenophon’s Hellenica which I started just to be thorough about Xenophon (after this, I’ll have read all of Xenophon in English at least) but is proving to have lots of stories about the decline and fall of various regimes. That decline seems to be consistently tied to abuse of the law. Am I going to get an article out of all this? Probably, but it’ll take some time; this is still a note-taking stage.

The humidity here today and yesterday has been disgusting; if I just stand outside for a few minutes, I start sweating. On the whole, though, the weather has been beautiful here and I’ve enjoyed myself. Now if I can get a doctorate one of these days…

  1. I read the Republic about 20 years ago, and it made a profound impression on me at that point.. maybe I should have a refresher course. Who knows what I would get out of it these days!
