@ Laurence - Thanks for the comment! Yeah, another friend from the UK says he remembers what happened that day too, and I think it's awesome you guys care.

It was awful here those days. The initial report was 50,000 dead, reduced to 20,000 that night. And the buildings were collapsing all around the area and it was dangerous as all hell for anyone trying to rescue anyone else, in addition to the fact that we thought someone would try to strike again somehow.

I understand that I'm from the UK..but for what it's worth I remember that day too. I remember coming home from school with a friend's parent, she seemed shocked or upset about something, although I didn't know what. All I gathered was that something terrible had happened in America (a big place far away). When I got home, my mother was sat on the floor, staring at the TV. I remember her face, whatever was happening seemed to disturb her more than the average news-tragedy. She spent a long time in front of the TV.... I was too young to understand what the big deal was at the time.... perhaps that's why I remember it , because everyone seemed moved and I didn't understand why.

The point of me saying this, is just to say that for whats it's worth (again) the U.K was pretty shocked too.

@ Amanda - I should have skipped. I think we were covering Wordsworth that morning - I read a lot of poetry and still haven't gotten into him.

Still thoroughly relevant. September 2008.

September 11, 2001 I was skipping- y'know, worthless political science classes ;) in the living room with my mom right when the first plane hit- then we watched the second and stared at the tv and then glued to the radio for a very long time waiting for something else to happen.

I'm with David- I became damn proud of my President that day and my country, but the fact is none of it would have mattered had I not already had a degree of "patriotism" identification with my nationality, pride in my country. Otherwise this would have just been something that happened to New Yorkers. I've actually fought with a relatively intense patriotism my entire life-- the patriotism always wins out.

@ David: Yeah, a small but still sizeable enough minority at Rutgers had a very noisy, active march to protest the war. There was one member of that march who was actually pretty cute, but it still made my stomach turn.

The cops protecting the marchers - some of us weren't in so generous a mood - shouted "you people make me sick. God bless America."

I was in Bed in Oregon My wife woke me up to see the tower come down.
It Made me angry and I remember thinking that this would be another instance of Hand wringing and B.S. as usual. As it had been since in my recollection The USS Pueblo Incident. The President Made me proud when We got knee deep into the Taliban
