Things I’ve Learned Watching Cable Instead of Writing My Dissertation

  • Advertisements for video games such as “Frontlines: Fuel of War” and “Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare” have convinced me that a global war for oil among industrialized nations would be the coolest thing ever.
  • At my best, I’m some combination of Brian and Quagmire from Family Guy, particularly both characters from the episode where Meg takes Brian to the Junior Prom and goes psycho.
  • E! is vastly underrated. Other than C-Span and basketball and anime, it’s the only thing I can learn from. Specifically: so much on E! is clearly fake, where people in “reality” shows are way too aware of the audience and playing to the camera, that one can learn exactly how not to act on camera. E! might be the best argument I’ve seen for being yourself; when E! is at its snarky best, i.e. “The Soup,” it just lets the ridiculousness of other shows speak via clips.
  • When I get home, I’m probably going to buy FLCL – it’s that good, and deserving of being blogged about.

  1. Furi Kuri is awesome. My friend Jess has it on DVD.

I can’t say that I’m a huge fan of E!, but they do have some interesting programs.

Zach, the devil he is, bought us a 32″ HD TV. It’ll be here tomorrow and while I don’t have cable in this apartment at least the stations we do get will look fantastic since they are all broadcast in HD now anyway. Zach says who needs cable when we can watch Antiques Road Show in HD! hahaha
